Perfect video recorder
About 2 months ago, I described my vision of "ideal DVR for car" and even sent it to all the leading Russian developers of such devices. Response received from only one, remaining silent. To good not to disappear, and, at the same time to give the topic for discussion (all of a sudden it bothers someone else besides me?: o) I decided to publish the text of this document here.
A suitable topic, I could not find, therefore let them hang in, "I'm a PR", and there, at the discretion of the moderators.
Background
DVRs are popular with car owners for obvious reasons. The controversial situation on the road, crime, the possibility of self-provision of evidence in court, etc., the Demand for these devices is constantly growing and currently the market features dozens of models. In the catalog Yandex.Market they can be found more than 1400 models. Neither one of them can be called "perfect."
This is most likely because the manufacturer is committed to reduce the price and lose in quality, or provides quality recording, but the strange ergonomics. Anyway, I could not find on the list a model that has been praised users, which cost commensurate with its functions and would be simple and reliable. So I decided to describe the "perfect" DVR that I bought would enjoy the most and which could be of interest, I hope, wider audience.
The main attention should be paid to four key settings:
— ergonomic design (the device may need to remove and put back and it should be very simple and reliable)
- high-quality shooting (most of the users want to "read the room" during shooting, including and at night)
— easy to operate (push of a button on the hanging under the windshield instrument uncomfortable)
— conformable price feature set
Why buy?
DVR currently has become a major help in addressing issues related to accidents and traffic violations. Also, many car owners use it for "chronicle of events" recording incidents on the road. Initially an expensive device, now significantly dropped in price and became popular with the mass market. At the same time, in the market there are no devices that combine acceptable quality of the recording, able to connect to the Internet and have a good design and interface.
The proposed development may become the first such device, and "blow up the market", affecting the direction of the development of this sector as a whole.
1. Summary of the proposal
In this document, formulated ideas for the development of the DVR, which differs from most available on the market that have an external (remote) control is a special terminal with buttons for mounting on the handlebar, as well as the ability to control with your smartphone. Other details of the proposal were significant only to ensure the proper performance of the device, but do not brings nothing new in its design.

3. Distinguishing features and key points

The setting of the DVR is possible via connection to a PC or through a mobile phone.

If the logger is equipped with a GPRS modem, it can serve as an in-car wireless access point.
Writing ON the DVR using the Android operating system will allow in the future to complete functionality of the device by third parties (for example, "voice warning of speed cameras" or the presence of traffic jams ahead on the route, etc.).
4. Distinctive features of the device
Currently, most registrars have a very awkward fastening system, which involves a rather flimsy hinge with a suction Cup and a short wire, not allowing aesthetically pleasing to fit the device in the vehicle interior.
As a counterexample can result in extremely simple and secure attachment of the TomTom Navigator, which holds the device very tightly, there is no single "fragile" items and can take/deliver the device with one hand.
The availability of suitable fasteners may stimulate consumers to select the DVR. In addition, the shape of the device and the plastic from which the shell is designed, should be aesthetically pleasing, pleasant to the touch and tough enough to not break from lying in the glove box, falling from a small height, etc.
For ease of mounting you can use a hinge like shown in the diagram below. Unpleasant property of the vast number on the market devices is the presence of a weak front camera. Most of the users have complained in reviews that the picture looks dull, looked through the license plates, bad quality photos at night, etc, the new device should pay attention to the recording, i.e. the optics and the matrix. This will certainly increase the cost of construction, but can be a decisive factor for selection.
The ability to control the device via smartphone app will allow you to get away from the primitive "built-in" interfaces and buttons on the device to clear the interfaces on the screen of the phone that much easier. And this is the third reason in favor of the selection of the DVR.
5. Online service for users
To connect the DVR with the control program in the smartphone, simply enter the unique device code in the phone interface of the program. The user can manage the device in range built-in antennas (up to 10-15 metres).
If the user wants to upload captured videos on the web portal and manage the device remotely (via the Internet), you will need to register on the portal and to link your account with an ID of your DVR.

9. Step-by-step development with increased functionality
To reduce the time to production of a prototype and the costs, you can apply the tactics used by Apple. The first step is to produce the simplest model, which, with excellent quality capture card, able to send the recorded video to the Internet. For this you will need to work only optics on any "rough" the DVR, and to add a GPRS module. In fact, you can do such a development on basic database of any unmarked cell phone – it is equipped with everything necessary from the point of view of the design. On the remote control are only two buttons, the basic model is inexpensive and different from the competition by thoughtful design, materials and functionality (Internet connection).

11. Estimated volume market
In 2011 in Russia according to the analytical agencies has been sold about 300 thousand DVRs. In 2012 this market will grow two or three times its volume will be from 700 thousand to one million devices.
The proposed product is targeted primarily at the network audience, who are willing to spend on quality, fashionable gadget around 10,000 rubles ($330).
Estimating total sales in 2013 year to 1 million devices, we can assume that the proper quality and efforts on the promotion can be sold for about 1-3% of the total, i.e. about 10,000 devices, ensuring revenue of about $3 million.
The intended device on the qualities is a unique product on the market and can therefore be sold not only in Russia but also worldwide.
The lack of analogues, the presence of the Internet community (see Appendix with references) of users will only increase sales.
"Professional users" (taxi, courier service, etc.) will also bring some income to pay for access to the site. Estimating the cost of the monthly payment is 60 rubles for each connected to the system vehicle, and the amount of legal taxis in Moscow in 10,000 cars, we can assume that the coverage is only 10% their services future services will help to sell 1000 devices and will bring $24.000 for the year.
12. The proposed project team
